A SPECIAL BOAT:
Nathanael Herreshoff designed the H 12 1/2 in 1914.
It has been in continuous production since then and is nearly universally acclaimed as on of the finest small boats of all time.
By 1914 Mr. Herreshoff had a legendary career of designing and building 6 consecutive Americas Cup boats and winning 6 consecutive victories.
Beginning construction of the 12 1/2, his Herreshoff Manufacturing Company built 364 wooden 12 1/2 boats from 1914 to 1943, when all manufacturing efforts were shifted to World War 2 military productions.
In 1947, Cape Cod Shipbuilding Co. acquired the rights to the 12 1/2 design and switched to fiberglass hulls in 1950.
In continuous production since then to today new boats ($60,000 +/-) and all parts and accessories are readily available.

Classic Boat magazine Technical Editor, Theo Rye, has written about the 12 1/2 these are keel boats with a hefty ballast ratio, a healthy beam/length ratio and a modest sail area, your chance of capsizing are vanishingly small.
Also, the cockpit is deep enough to offer security when the boat begins to heel and its large enough for friends to share and move about.
The 12 1/2 is responsive enough to reward experience but forgiving enough not to punish inexperience.

All mystuff
History: I purchased the boat, named the Black Pearl, still new, from its original owner in Massachusetts and trailered it back to Texas.
Absolutely no problems.
She has been used in fresh water only, including summer in Grand Lake, Colorado.
Over my 10 years of ownership the boat has been in storage for 7 plus years with a little more than 2 years docked in Lake Travis, Texas, marinas.
I have gotten to be 82 years old, retired in the Texas Hill Country, while my boat is still in like-new condition she needs a new skipper.
